Stud manager Mick Frappell discussing yearlings with buyers at last year's sale.

FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH

Welcome to the February edition of FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH.

February is known to most as the month of love as Valentine's Day looms upon us, however, in the breeding world February is a gauge and stepping stone to events that are etched into calendars around the state.

The countdown has certainly commenced with only six weeks until Queensland's newest sale, the Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale.

Clear Mountain Fairview is proud and excited to present an outstanding draft for the 2010 QTIS 600 Yearling Sale.

Our draft is well represented by the first crop of outstanding yearlings by Group 1 winning two-year-old Outback Prince.

Only two commercial stallions stand in Queensland that achieved Group 1 status as two-year-olds;  Outback Prince and Zaha, both of which stand proudly at Clear Mountain Fairview.

The success of Tycoon Ruler (which also proudly stands at Clear Mountain Fairview) this racing season has pushed him to the top of the Australia sires list for best strike rate of winners vs. runners for three-year-olds.

As you compete for over $15 million in prizemoney in the QTIS 600 race series, an equine athlete is needed that can go early and all three sires – Outback Prince, Zaha and Tycoon Ruler, have proven their ability of performing and producing early winning types.

We have selected our best yearlings for this sale and they are all more than worthy of a look.

Three weeks after the QTIS 600 Sale, the team at Clear Mountain Fairview will travel to Rockhampton for the annual Capricornia Yearling Sale.

We are taking a draft of five yearlings by stud sires; Outback Prince, Zaha and Tycoon Ruler.

Included among the draft is the full sister to Central-Queensland's winning youngster Mule Forty Six (lot number 83).

To arrange an inspection for any of the above yearlings, or view the video footage please contact the stud manager Mick Frappell on 0403 047 685 or email:
admin@clearmountainstud.com.au.

The months of March and April will be well travelled, however, we are extremely excited about what the 2010 autumn holds for Clear Mountain Fairview.

BREEDING

As mentioned above, Tough Luck continues to collect winner's cheques through the QTIS 600 race series with over $235,000 collected in prizemoney, making her a true cinderella story for the series as she was purchased for only $9,000.

It was again a classy performance as the Zaha two-year-old Tough Luck collected her fourth win for local trainer Robert Bradshaw and owners Leigh and Leith Wanless at Caloundra on January 17.

Not only was the win exciting for all connections, but Tough Luck (F2 Zaha-Gudwill) collected a whopping $96,000 for the QTIS 600 race series win. Not a bad effort for a day out at her home track!

Tough Luck lined up in barrier 10 for her third consecutive start, but this did not faze the well travelled filly or jockey Jim Byrne who was in the saddle for the second time.

Byrne was instructed by Bradshaw to be aggressive and sit just outside the leader and instructions were followed to a tee.

As the 14 horse field jumped, Tough Luck cantered beside pacesetter Queen of Happiness (Mandy Radecker) but as the finishing post neared, the Zaha filly pulled away from the field for a winning margin of one and three quarter lengths.

The wide barrier saga continued when Tough Luck jumped from barrier 11 in an 11 horse field at Doomben on Australia Day in the QTIS 600 Added Stakes Handicap for fillies over 1010 meters.

Tough by name and tough by nature, Tough Luck worked hard throughout the race to run home for a third placing.

Congratulations to all connections on the filly's performances and we wish you the best of luck for her future endeavors.

Zaha continued his fine form of producing winners when Stop Lying subjugated his field at Clifford Park last Saturday night.

The win for the Kingmambo sire-line gelding was nothing short of a memorable run as he blitzed the field in the Class 4 over 1300 meters when he led from jump to winning post.

Bookies had it correct as Stop Lying (G4 Zaha-Royal Covet) jumped as the $2.40 race favourite and he kicked away from the field as they approached on the straight.

There is no lying in the form as the lightly raced gelding has recorded five wins, a second and a third from as little as eight starts.

His only unplaced start came from when he lined up in town last start over 1000 meters and got caught at the back of the field, making it impossible for a clear run.

Congratulations to Toowoomba trainer Tony Sears and owners Bob and Maree Frappell on the fabulous win.

The winner's bar fridge needed restocking when more than a few celebratory drinks were consumed, as the big day out at the races became successful.

Stop Lying has now amassed over $63,000 in his short racing career and as he continues to stride on, he will tackle town company in Brisbane next Saturday.

Good luck to all connections when the mirror-image of Zaha lines up in town.

The spotlight then turns to Tycoon Ruler as his strike rate as the best sire in Australia for winners vs. runners continues to soar, scoring a winner three races prior to Stop Lying's win.

I'll Rule proved it is all in the name as he jumped from barrier eight and sat at the back of the field until he straightened where he then let loose and flew home for a one and one and a half length victory from the race favourite.

With Sheree Drake in the saddle, the perfect ingredients were combined for a winning performance on and off the track as the Tycoon Ruler youngster paid a generous $11 for the win.

Congratulations to connections, including Dalby-based trainer Matt Kropp who also retains a share in the gelding along with his partner Kate and Mr. and Mrs Andrew Hall of Brisbane.

I'll Rule (G3 Tycoon Ruler-I'll Wait) was bred by Matt and Kate after they sent the dam, I'll Wait, to Tycoon Ruler in his freshman year at stud.

Consequently, this is the mare's first foal and she is off to a running start with this handy three-year-old.

Good luck to all connections when I'll Rule rules trackside tomorrow. Good luck!

SPELLING

"Ask any horse that has agisted or spelled here at Clear Mountain Fairview and they will insist your athlete shouldn't miss the experience," 2010 Fitton winner and Clear Mountain Fairview resident speller, Ghostnthedarkness said.

And the experience has been memorable for many horses making a name for themselves just this month alone.

Trial winners Tell'em It's Easy, Monaleah, Listen Son and Backstage Tycoon are just a few equine athletes that are back in work and performing well after holidaying at the Clear Mountain Fairview spelling facilities.

We wish all connections the best of luck when these trial winners and speller residents line up for their first start. Good luck!

Speller residents continued to shine on the metropolitan track with Smuggler's Inn and Red Raider's collecting winner's cheques at Eagle Farm.

Under the expert guidance of Toowoomba trainer and reigning Trainers Premiership holder Michael Nolan, Smuggler's Inn recorded his third win for connections as he continues to race over more ground.

Red Raiders do not disappoint trainer Tony Sears as he bounded home for a one and one quarter length win over the 1200 meter journey.

It was the second win for the Flemming family of Paradise Point after Red Raiders broke his maiden status at Doomben in October last year.

The lightly raced four-year-old has had only seven starts for two wins and three runner-up placings.

Red Raiders ran fourth in both of the unplaced runs.

Congratulation to all connections and we wish you the best of luck for Red Raiders next start.

BREAKING

The Clear Mountain Fairview breaker graduates continue to shine as sibling Listen Son and Backstage Tycoon dominate their trials in Toowoomba on February 3.

Both horses are the younger siblings of city winner Phebetay, who was also broken-in at Clear Mountain Fairview.

Listen Son and Backstage Tycoon are following in the steps of their older sister as Listen Son returns to the track after his city winning form last year.

The two-year-old Tycoon Ruler filly, Backstage Tycoon, has not hit the track as yet but going on all reports and the current form, it is worth putting a couple of pennies as an each way bet.

To avoid the wait of getting your athlete broken-in, contact Stud Manager Mick Frappell to make your booking.

We have an extremely high standard when it comes to educating and pre- training equine athletes and understand what is needed for their journey on the track.

Our superb facilities which include a 1500 meter training track, a four (4) horse jump out barriers, stabling and exceptional horse exercise machine builds a progressive and solid foundation for any equine participant.

A combination of knowledge, modern facilities, perseverance and diligence makes Clear Mountain Fairview the only choice when it comes to the education of your equine athlete.

PRE-TRAINING

After spending over eight months in the paddock spelling at Clear Mountain Fairview, Stop Lying has done more than a few laps on the pre-training track to work off his 'belly' that he had developed during his holiday.

Some even thought he was the fat lead pony!

His pre-training has certainly paid dividends as the Zaha sired gelding continues to make ways up the grades in a fashionable effort.

Pre-training and education is offered at Clear Mountain Fairview alongside the breaking-in services with stud manager Mick Frappell.

For enquiries, please contact Mick on 0403 047 685 or email:
